Common Chord - with David Grisman
Originally released in 1993, many might consider this outing with mandolin virtuoso David Grisman a family affair! Not only is Daniel’s violin playing featured on this recording, but his children, Semyon and Lisa, can be heard as well adding cello and viola to this wonderful tapestry of acoustic instruments. Bluegrass, classical, rock and jazz are all represented while exploring traditional pieces and others from the country and folk repertoire. The great (grateful?) Jerry Garcia can also be heard slinging his six-string on this recording!
“One hears so many different musical influences within David Grisman's self-described ‘dawg’ music that it wasn't surprising that he joined a number of excellent musicians from the fields of classical, bluegrass, rock, and jazz for this somewhat obscure date recorded for the tiny (and likely, now defunct) Cymekob. The music within this disc includes traditional American songs, country, and Texas swing.” - Ken Dryden, All Music Guide
