Music, the developing brain, and sleep
It’s no secret that music does wonders for people at any age, but what about the developing brain? Exposing your child to music at an early age is known to accelerate brain development and increase cognitive ability in myriad areas. The University of Southern California performed a five year study on music and the developing brain, and the accompanying results were published in the Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience journal. Learning to play an instrument and exposing children to music at an early age yields positive gains in nearly every aspect of their cognition. Math, language, social, and motor sensory skills all see improvement, and even SAT scores have shown gains (Bright Horizons). But how can music help support sleep? For those of you out there that have children, how many of you have used music, and with great efficacy, to gently push your infants or toddler off to dreamland? How many times have you also fallen asleep while taking in the soothing sounds with your children? The benefits of utilizing music as a sleep aid are many, and it can also aid in alleviating the stress hormone cortisol (Sleep Foundation).
