Holdin’ On To Yesterday
Let’s talk about Daniel Kobialka, the rocker. One of the things that always floored me was Daniel’s openness to all genres of music. I can recall a couple of times when we sat together in the studio and explored some of the more radical and heavier music that I sometimes listen to. It was during one of these discussions that Dan informed me of his relationship with the 70s giants, Ambrosia. Ambrosia’s eponymous debut LP, was mixed by none other than Alan Parsons - it went on to receive a Grammy nomination for Best Engineered Recording. The first single, “Holdin’ On To Yesterday”, was not only a top 20 hit, but it also featured our very own Kobialka on violin. Daniel’s touch and presence can be felt at the 2:15 mark as he enters with his lead line. While the guitar takes the main lead in the left channel with flourishes of energy and tricky runs, Kobialka’s playing is purely sublime in the right channel, with sustained notes emoting exactly as they should.
Kobialka can be heard on other commercial recordings which sit outside his own catalog of new age and classical re-imaginings. In the coming weeks, we will continue to explore this side of Daniel’s extensive body of work.
