Bernstein’s Mass and Kobialka
Leonard Bernstein’s Mass is a celebrated work and one that has been performed and/or recorded on multiple occasions. Commissioned by Jacqueline Kennedy, Mass’ premier was featured as a part of the opening of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts on September 8, 1971. Best described as musical theater, Mass’ premier featured conductor Maurice Peress and our own Daniel Kobialka as the concertmaster. A robust work featuring dancing, various vocal groups, and genre hopping musical pieces, Mass is an exploration of faith in multiple movements.
There has been an increased interest in Bernstein as of late, thanks to Bradley Cooper’s Maestro that debuted on Netflix in September of 2023. If you have not already viewed this film, here’s your reminder.
